A short film about the San Gorgonio wind farm in California. It is possibly one of the best-known wind projects in the world.
There are many wind turbines at the site. Many of them are from the 80s and 90s and no longer work.
A good example of this is in the image above. You can tell these are small wind turbines from the tower design.
Today’s towers are designed to carry maintenance team members as much as 100-metres in the air. Moreover, these machines also have small blades and generators.
One of the problems with a project like this is it would cost a large amount of money to dispose of these wind turbines. So many of them remain, despite this being one of the windiest parts of California.
There is estimated to be as many as 14,000 abandoned wind turbines in the area. It raises questions about the viability of repowering as the cost of dismantling such a large number of machines would be expensive.
At the same time, this is, without doubt, a prime piece of wind energy real estate.
